Archangel Michael

St. Michael (from Hebrew: “Who is like God!”) is one of the Archangels venerated in Christianity, as well as in Judaism and Islam. According to tradition, Michael was the first to oppose Lucifer’s rebellion. The Bible presents Archangel Michael as the leader of the heavenly hosts, an intercessor in the battle against evil, and a protector of the faithful. His veneration has existed since the beginnings of Christianity.

This work is based on a 15th-century Byzantine icon, with the color palette and the use of a dark background referencing fresco painting.

Archangel Michael

An icon depicting Archangel Michael. The figure is presented in the traditional manner, with a raised, double-edged sword in his right hand and a scabbard in his left. The Archangel wears the full armor of a Byzantine cavalryman – a leather cuirass with a breastplate – while the red cloak draped over his shoulder signifies his high military rank.

The inscription is rendered in Old Church Slavonic using ligature majuscules – abbreviations that combine several letters into a single character topped with a titlo, under which omitted letters in the word are indicated.
